Island Turf Crafts is located in Coalisland, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland and was founded in 1980. The owner, Brian McGirr, is a craft teacher and carver by trade. He has experience carving musical instruments out of wood. He has now transferred his carving skills to that of Irish turf to create authentic Irish gifts.

Historically, Ireland was largely covered by wetlands called bogs. Over thousands of years vegetation decomposed in the bogs and created turf. Traditionally, Irish families have cut, dried, and burned turf as a fuel source for heating their homes.

Now, the craftsmen of Island Turf Crafts excavate turf from bogs all over Ireland, such as Lough Neagh. The turf is first dried in a kiln to create the peat. Next, the peat is processed and then carved into beautiful Irish and Celtic designs. A unique brown finish is applied to the final product to highlight all the delicate details. Their selection of handcrafted gifts include Celtic Crosses, harps, clocks, statues, plaques, frames, jewelry. Ideal for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or retirement celebrations. Each gift has its own story to tell, which is as old as the turf itself.
